Bring the drama: the dishes you won’t forget

Mealtimes will never be quite the same after you have experienced the finest dining theatrics on Sloane Street

3 May 2024

We hate to break it to you, but smoke billowing out of your oven after a forgotten dinner doesn’t quite count as pyrotechnics. Some things are best left to the experts, and it just so happens that Sloane Street is home to some of the most dramatic culinary experiences around. From cloud-filled cloches at Azzurra to elegant tableside theatrics at The LaLee within The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel, these encore-worthy spots will have you putting knives and forks down for a round of applause.

Tableside theatre at The LaLee

A homage to Lillie Langtry, the charming Chelsea socialite who once resided at The Cadogan, it’s only right that The LaLee has a signature dish befitting of the original party girl and beloved hostess with the mostest.

The Dover sole meunière – accompanied by sophisticated sides of new potatoes and grilled broccoli – is served tableside by skilled waiters, who fillet the fish in front of you with panache. The LaLee’s trolley also takes centre stage in the restaurant’s steak tartare dish, created by a capable hand at the table, with just the right amount of each ingredient added to suit each diner’s palate. A beguiling touch of theatre that we think Lillie herself would have approved of.

Dessert showstoppers à la Colbert

Inspired by the great boulevard cafés of Paris, Colbert lends itself perfectly to an afternoon of solo dining, bringing French flair for dramatics to Sloane Square as you cast yourself as the main character as you wistfully sip an aperitif (perhaps while writing in a diary, exuding a seductive air of mystery).

In true Parisian fashion, its dessert offering offers charming je ne sais quoi.

The Tarte Tatin à la Mode is made for two to share and served whole at the table – a dish that makes for the perfect extra in romantic scenes. Like your drama on the sweet side? The signature banana split, caramelised and decadently topped with ice cream, whipped cream, raspberry purée and flaked almonds, certainly exudes leading lady energy.

Azzurra’s smoky steak

Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Monica Bellucci – if there’s one thing the Italians know well, it’s how to do drama. With its sea-blue setting and nautical décor, Azzurra transports you to the Amalfi Coast, serving la dolce vita to the discerning palates of Chelsea.

One of the latest additions to Azzurra’s menu, the Filetto di Manzo, sees a glass cloche ceremoniously lifted on arrival at the table, wafting delicate plumes and a delectable smokey scent from the prime beef fillet beneath. Served with black truffle, potato millefoglie, black garlic, and chervil, this smoke show certainly has heads turning for all the right reasons.

Sparks fly at The Aubrey

Dinner at The Aubrey feels like an immersive theatrical experience from curtains up – its whimsical décor sees rich red velvet furnishings and gilded embellishments adorning every inch of its wooden-panelled rooms. But it is the eccentric dishes at this Japanese izakaya experience that really steal the show.

The Tamagoyaki lobster bun, filled with delicate Japanese omelette and spicy homemade sauce, and topped with salmon caviar, is certainly a dish you won’t forget, but it is the flaming Death By Chocolate pudding that is the real showstopper here. A golden sphere of five different chocolate elements, it is ignited at the table with a flaming drizzle of rum. Now that’s showmanship.

Top-secret tipples ...At Sloane

On Sloane Street, the drama doesn’t start and finish with the dish. Ambience is all about the anticipation, and that is exactly what the team behind …At Sloane have created. Journey up to its top-floor cupola restaurant where the drama begins with breathtaking skyline views, or slink into its speakeasy bar – the secrets of which are kept closely guarded as Chelsea’s ultimate ‘if-you-know-you-know’ spot.

With plush banquettes, a palette of Etruscan red and soft candlelight calling for a decedent rendezvous, we can’t say too much about its rumoured snack menu. However, with our aptitude for theatrics and access-all-areas sources, we can divulge that the intriguingly named The Nems and the Vapeur de Crevettes ‘Lily Wang’ – accompanied by a signature Dirty Martini or Spicy Jalapeño Margarita – are more than worth the suspense.
