What to wear: Wimbledon

Perfect the courtside dress code and ace your Wimbledon look with these stylish outfit inspirations

2 July 2024

Since 1877, Wimbledon has captured the unwavering attention of the world’s tennis fans. However, Wimbledon is so much more than a tournament, with what is worn courtside being as much of an event as the matches. As a spectator, whether you are a member of the royal family, an A-list attendee or simply a tennis enthusiast, ensuring you’re suitably dressed for the occasion is a sport unto itself.

With no strict dress code per se, anything that falls under ‘smart casual’ goes (except for those lucky guests in the Royal Box, who must dress to impress to avoid being denied entry – perish the thought). Think dresses and blazers, as well as ready-for-anything tote bags and, of course, comfy footwear.

Should you not have tickets to the drama on Centre Court, fret not – you can still serve some serious style right here in Chelsea, where Strawberries and Screen returns to Duke of York Square from 12-14 July. Soak up the nail-biting atmosphere in a stunning setting in front of the outdoor screen. Traditional tennis treats of strawberries and cream can be enjoyed with a glass of celebratory champagne or Pimm’s from the Partridges pop-up bar.

Despite the classic British weather trope, Wimbledon has seen some scorching days over the years. Linen, in particular, is a breathable and timeless fabric that is the perfect antidote to London’s sticky heat. This Giorgio Armani trouser suit will ensure you stay cool and stylish when courtside.

While the tennis players may be confined to a strict all-white dress code, that doesn’t mean you need to be. This powder-blue dress by Gucci, paired with dainty brown accessories, epitomises smart-casual summer style. Complete the look with a roomy woven tote bag, where you’ll have enough space to carry a light layer come the late-afternoon chill.

Tailored looks are very much at home at Wimbledon and these Jacquemus shorts fit the bill. Taking a cue from the players’ legendarily dazzling white ensembles, an understated logo detail in a neutral hue moves the look away from sports-kit territory and into the realms of high fashion.

Channel the Princess of Wales when she visited Wimbledon in 2022 and opt for a timeless polka-dot midi dress. Sophisticated and elegant, its monochrome design calls for matching flats, while finishing-touch shades mean you won’t miss a second of the action should the sun decide to shine.

And for the gents, channel an elevated sporting aesthetic courtesy of a long-sleeve polo and chinos. A tried-and-tested combination that’s elevated by luxury fabrications and distinct details, wear with a classic pair of leather loafers to bring an air of refinement that’ll tick any dress code boxes.
