The new-season trends to know

With the spring 2023 collections now in store, there’s a whole new set of trends to get excited about. These are the six we think are most worth wearing

8 March 2023

The spring/summer 2023 collections are here and, with them, a whole host of new trends to navigate. So, what should we be wearing this season?

This spring and summer, designers put a utilitarian spin on things, favouring cargo pants and denim in reassuringly easy-to-wear silhouettes. Denim is so big this season, in fact, that at Bottega Veneta, Kate Moss took to the catwalk in a pair of loose-fitting leather trousers, printed to look like blue denim – a completely luxe seal of approval on the trend.

Meanwhile, the cargo pants trend that took over TikTok last year is here to stay, with brands including Brunello Cucinelli, Ralph Lauren and Off-White turning out some very covetable – and practical – examples.

At the other end of the spectrum, there is a strong vein of glamour running through the collections, with day-time metallics, embellishment and major, shoulder-grazing earrings all big looks.

Ahead, six spring 2023 fashion trends to add to your shopping list now and all year.

CARGO PANTS

Wear with simple shirting and heels for evening or a boxy T-shirt and trainers for more low-key moments. Trousers of every shape and fit were big this season, but cargos are the most fashion-forward way to work the trend.

MAJOR EARRINGS

The bigger, the better. Whether Anabela Chan’s bejewelled chandelier earrings, Saint Laurent’s clavicle-grazing ear candy or Gucci’s glam gold set, wear with your hair up to make the most of the drama.

MAXI SKIRTS

Whether clingy and boho as at Chloé or more functional like Agolde’s (both at Harvey Nichols) denim version and Burberry’s jeans-waisted skirt, maxi skirts are continuing the trend for all things ’90s. Wear yours with box-fresh trainers or a pair of demure ballet pumps – which brings us to…

BALLET PUMPS

Yes, they’re back. Thank God. Post lockdown, so many of us have been reluctant to dig out the heels, so it’s with great relief and gratitude that we welcome back the ballet pump from the fashion faux pas territory it has been dwelling in for recent years. There’s never been a better time to invest in a pair of classic Chanel two-tone ballet pumps.

METALLICS ALL-DAY

Shades of copper, gold and silver are no longer just for after dark. Valentino’s sequinned (and feathered!) cardigan will look lovely with a pair of ripped jeans, while Ralph Lauren’s gold cargo pants tick off two trends at once. Wear with a chunky knit or cashmere T-shirt.

DENIM

Denim everything is a major trend this season. Another boon for those actively avoiding anything approaching grown-up style. Bottega Veneta’s ultra-luxurious denim-printed leather jeans are testament to the strength of the trend. Besides jeans, denim dresses, shirts and jackets are all big news this season.
