An expert panel of Royal Horticultural Society judges and influencer Pretty Little London has awarded Hackett with the Best Floral Display Award for this year’s Chelsea In Bloom, London’s largest free flower festival. 

In keeping with this year’s theme, British Icons, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Hackett team created a ‘Love Letter to the Queen’, with an oversized floral Royal Mail box and a gigantic letter being posted by two Hackett mannequins. They are surrounded by floral crowns and piles of mail in tribute to Her Majesty and the Royal Mail service. 

The competition saw participants showcasing fresh floral displays, each reflecting their own unique interpretation of the British Icons theme, which saw plenty of nods to the Queen, corgis, London buses, Mini Coopers, Alice in Wonderland and traditional afternoon tea. The judges based their decision on originality, quality of finish and planting choice, overall effect and interpretation of this year’s theme.

The Highly Commended Award was presented to Jo Malone London for its interpretation of an English country garden populated by corgis, and Scribbler on the King’s Road won the Innovation Award.

Several of Sloane Street’s boutiques and hotels were awarded with Gold Awards, including Beaverbrook Town House, named after Lord Beaverbrook (1879-1964), a Canadian-born newspaper magnate who became a British icon in his own right as Churchill’s wartime minister of aircraft production and a famously hospitable host who welcomed movie stars, writers and politicians to his discreetly hedonistic weekend parties on his Surrey estate, Cherkley Court (now the Beaverbrook country hotel).

For its display, the hotel paid tribute to Lord Beaverbrook’s wartime achievement of tripling the production of Spitfires in Britain with an eye-catching floral Spitfire display surrounded by a lush array of blue and white flowers. 

The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel, collaborated with renowned florist Simon Lycett on a display that celebrates the glorious gardens of Britain, highlighting the hotel’s proximity to one of London’s most iconic garden squares, Cadogan Place Gardens. Using an abundance of beautiful British-grown and sourced botanicals in patriotic shades of red, white and blue, arranged against a backdrop of native seasonal tree foliage, the display is garlanded with British flag bunting for a festive flourish. 

Other Gold Award winners included Cartier, which covered its store with innumerable roses, Louis Vuitton, which partnered with British designer Full Grown on its striking window displays featuring trees shaped directly into elegant artworks and solid structures, and Rag & Bone, for its playful floral portrayal of the White Rabbit from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
