Three ways to wear: the Christmas jumper

How to style a Christmas jumper for any festive occasion

4 December 2023

There are few things that herald the start of the festive season as much as a properly cosy Christmas jumper, which is a genre of knitwear that stands alone in its hyper-specific seasonality and remarkably wide appeal. Because anyone who doesn’t enjoy a good Christmas jumper must also have a Grinch-like aversion to joy, puppies and goodness.

Christmas Jumper Day 2023 is on Thursday, 7 December, when you can help raise money by wearing your silliest festive knit – but we believe that there is vast potential for the sometimes-novelty seasonal sweater to be worn stylishly well beyond the festive period.

We asked our talented Sloane Street styling team for their expert advice on how to make one work for three different occasions, whether it’s a smart event that calls for a tailored approach, or a more relaxed moment with jeans and boots.

And, if you’d prefer to have a professional by your side as you’re styling your Christmas jumper, you can book an appointment with one of our friendly and unfailingly fashion-savvy stylists here.

Look 1

A velvet suit in a juicy shade of mulled wine takes the cosy knit to glamorous new highs. Style it with off-white kitten heels with a matching bag to be the gift that doesn’t stop giving.

Look 2

Keep wrapped up all winter in deep forest green, pairing the perfect Fair Isle festive jumper with simple black jeans and flat, wear-all-day Chelsea boots. Add a long trench coat with a fur trim to stay rosy-cheeked and warm.

Leather adds an edge to the quaint charm of the Fair Isle pattern, while red tights bring a jolly flash of seasonal colour to the ensemble. Hot tip: if you like a more relaxed fit, don’t be afraid to shop from the men’s department for a looser-fitting leather jacket.
