Cartier: Tank watch

Created in 1917 the Cartier Tank family of watches has been popular with artistic and cultural avant-gardes for more than a century. Even as it has reinvented itself over the years with new iterations, it never strays too far from its inimitable style, and the Tank Louis Cartier is a prime example. With precise shapes, clean lines and perfect proportions, the Tank Louis Cartier watch epitomises balanced design and timeless elegance, if you excuse the phrasing. A story of unique heritage, it was created in 1917 and inspired by the silhouette of a military tank when viewed from above – the yellow gold case seamlessly merging into the alligator leather bracelet to become one piece, forgoing any break in its visual rhythm.

Instantly lauded by horological tastemakers of the time, Cartier’s Tank has continuously reinvented itself over the years to speak to myriad admirers, from the all-precious-metal Tank Française iterations to the slightly elongated Tank Américaine and the open-worked Tank Cintrée Skeleton. For us, it is the simplicity and understated style of the original that showcases the deftness of touch intrinsic to fine watchmaking, and the way it peeks from the cuff with an “if you know, you know” wink.

Tiffany & Co: Atlas watch

That instantly recognisable Tiffany ‘robin’s-egg’ blue hue has been transmitted from the fine jewellery house’s iconic boxes to the Atlas watch, which takes its inspiration from the elegant Roman numerals that decorate the clock above the entrance to Tiffany’s flagship Fifth Avenue store. Designed to be worn everyday, with simple lines and contemporary design, this stainless steel, Swiss-made timepiece boasts a soleil dial dotted with responsibly sourced round brilliant diamonds.

Boodles: Patek Philippe Twenty-4 watch

Luxury jewellery store Boodles has partnered with Patek Philippe for over 25 years, with a shared passion for exquisite design and craftsmanship – exemplified by its collection of haute horology by the Swiss maison. Founded in 1839 and honouring the noble artisanal techniques of its heritage to this day, Patek Philippe watches have a long history of gracing the wrists of noteworthy women – the brand eventually became Queen Victoria’s royal watchmaker.

This model – the Twenty-4 – was created in 1999 specifically for women, with a self-winding movement and 30-metre water resistance. The first model in its line-up to feature a round case, its elegance and femininity is spotlighted courtesy of a constellation of diamonds on its rose-gold dial and bracelet.

Audemars Piguet: Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph watch

Few fine watches come more recognisable than Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, and while it was first designed for men, it garners equal attention among timepiece aficionados as one of the most groundbreaking watches for women. Reimagined by Jacqueline Dimier in 1976 – one of the first female designers at the maison – the new-look Royal Oak signalled a move away from the jewellery-first, timekeeping second styles considered fashionable by women, tapping into the zeitgeist of change during the era.

Interrupting the model’s historic design codes by reworking its bold proportions to a smaller size, the women’s Royal Oak watch captures femininity with a bracelet that recalls the many facets of a diamond, all while preserving the legendary character of the original. Here we see a frosted 18-carat rose-gold finish that catches the light at every turn, an openworked dial, luminescent hands and a rainbow of bezel-set, baguette-cut precious stones, compelling you to take a closer look.

Chanel: Première Édition Originale watch

Synonymous with luxury and good taste, Chanel is reissuing the Première Édition Originale that was first introduced in 1987 under the creative direction of Jacques Helleu. Designed to be worn like a piece of jewellery, the chain bracelet intertwined with supple leather calls to mind the straps on Chanel’s classic quilted handbags, while distinct lines nod to the bottle stopper of the Chanel N°5 fragrance.

With a numeral-free, lacquered dial sits below emerald-cut bevelled crystal, and an onyx cabochon crowning the 18-carat yellow-gold case, the Chanel Première Édition Originale watch is inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s love of Baroque, Byzantine and Venetian treasures, with intense black completing the signature colour duo.

The clue is in the name: Omega’s De Ville Ladymatic has become a defining watch in women’s horology. First launched in 1955, it was among the first self-winding timepieces created especially for women, its captivating style inspiring a revamped line half a century later.

Here, an iridescent mother-of-pearl dial dances with changing colours in different wavelengths of light and viewing angles, while 18K rose gold signature ‘alpha’-shaped hands at the centre point to 11 diamond hour markers, with the 3 o’clock position occupied by a date window. The bezel, the dazzling star of the show, is paved with a halo of snow-set diamonds – each carefully chosen for their exquisite cut and carat to maximise brightness and scintillation – with a final brilliant diamond set into the winding mechanism (the crown) at the side.
