Get the look: Beyoncé

To celebrate 20 years of Beyoncé’s Dangerously in Love, fashion editor James Sleaford rounds up the singer’s best looks and how to wear them now

30 June 2023

Can you believe that Beyoncé’s debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, is 20 years old this month? It seems like only yesterday we were watching the Crazy in Love video on a loop and analysing the lyrics for references to the singer’s still semi-secret relationship with Jay-Z.

The album is a true R&B classic that still sounds just as good today as it did when it came out in June 2003. It has since sold more than 11 million copies and won five Grammy Awards at the 2004 ceremony where Beyoncé performed with Prince, forming perhaps the most iconic stage duo the world has ever seen.

And today? Queen Bey is mid-way through Renaissance, her latest world tour (which is on course to become the highest-grossing music tour in history), and it almost goes without saying that the outfits have been incredible.

To celebrate all of this, James Sleaford, formerly fashion director of French GQ, has reimagined five of the singer’s best looks with a Sloane Street twist, with the help of makeup artist Karis Hendry.

16th Essence Awards in Hollywood, 2003

From the year that Crazy in Love’s was released, this look channels the era’s goth-glam trend perfectly. The key to interpreting this two decades later, says Sleaford, is balancing the delicate, lingerie-inspired details with the heaviness of the gothic design. Saint Laurent’s spiked silver chain necklace contrasts the soft lace neckline and form-fitting silhouette of Dolce & Gabbana’s long dress, while the silver wrist cuff recalls rock’n’roll vibes, he explains. Finish the look with Dolce & Gabbana’s lace and grosgrain booties and sweep the gold and brown colours of Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘The Rebel’ eyeshadow palette over your lids.

Destiny’s Child reunion in Washington, DC, 2003

When Beyoncé filmed the Survivor music video with Destiny’s Child in 2001, the cargo trousers she wore underscored the song’s message of endurance against the odds. Proof that everything comes back into style, Beyoncé’s trousers from the band’s 2003 reunion are so 2023, and these satin ones from Fendi are a perfect way to interpret the outfit. Off-White’s crop top and trainers channel the singer’s sporty, dance look, says Sleaford. Meanwhile, we say “No, No, No” to Bey’s very ’90s necklace and suggest Louis Vuitton’s chunky chain as a cool update.

BET Awards in Los Angeles, 2006

There’s a hint of the ’80s in this black sequinned mini dress from 2006, but what makes it a classic is just how well it works on the red carpet as on the dancefloor at an afterparty. Sleaford picked this David Koma at Harvey Nichols number with a floor-sweeping panel for exactly the same reason – the ruched stretch-jersey is so comfortable and easy to dance in. Combined with Tom Ford’s signature padlock sandals and jewellery from Cartier and Saint Laurent, this is a timeless party look that you can wear from a Serpentine opening to Sumosan Twiga after dark.

BET Awards in Los Angeles, 2009

“You can’t beat an embellished mini dress for parties,” says Sleaford. Beyoncé’s Balmain dress from the BET Awards in 2009 still stands as perfect party attire today thanks to its structured shoulders and close fit – both brand signatures that are simply infallible. Head to Harvey Nichols to discover the French house’s full collection, which includes this showstopping gold number. Anabela Chan’s beautiful garden earrings will twinkle with your every move, while Ferragamo’s gold ‘Gancini’ sandals tie and a touch of bronzing cream from Chanel tie this shimmery look together.

MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, 2011

Bey’s Video Music Awards outfit reads like the ultimate guide on how to make an entrance. Glittering jewellery, vibrant colour and a flowing silhouette are the perfect elements for wedding-guest dressing, summer parties, or a night at the opera. Channel the outfit with Dolce & Gabbana’s long chiffon gown and chandelier earrings from Bulgari’s iconic ‘Serpenti’ collection. Gina’s crystal-embellished strappy heels will look beautiful peeking out from beneath the chiffon, while Graff’s diamond cuff echoes the design of the singer’s one. Keep makeup simple with a clear gloss from Dior.

Oh, and if you want to make like 2023 Beyoncé, then head down to Cale Street and treat yourself to some chocolate Birley Bakery, just as the star did whilst in town on the London leg of her tour.
