SELLERIA EXPERT AT FENDI

Last week at the Fendi store on Sloane Street, a handsome Italian selleria artisan was in situ, demonstrating the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes in to each bag from the brand’s Selleria collection.

The Selleria collection, which translates as ‘saddlery’, encapsulates the heritage of Fendi, which was founded in Rome in 1925 by Adele and Edoardo Fendi, who saw an opportunity to apply the manual skill in the treatment of Roman leather, which local master saddlers had available but reserved exclusively for the creation of traditional horse-riding accessories.

They believed that this heritage of craftsmanship was capable of finding a better expression, of being properly celebrated and handed down from one generation to the next. But it needed to blossom once again in order to grow. They therefore gave it a new interpretation, directing the master saddlers’ artisan know-how towards the production of sophisticated products to be worn on a daily basis.

With Fendi, the Selleria line pushes the boundaries of the specific sport it was confined to as it embellishes the aesthetics of bags and luggage, turning them into exclusive, captivating and impeccably made items.

The new Selleria line was launched in 2013 and presents eight new models in total, of which six carry the names of Adele and of the five Fendi sisters. Cut, stitched and entirely assembled by hand, each bag from the Selleria line is distinguished by a progressive number series engraved on a silver plaque featuring the serial number of the bag and the number of bags produced for each model represents the bag’s identity card and certifies its one-of-a-kind nature.

It also further enhances its underlying craftsmanship by associating the name of each model to the exact number of stitches applied by hand by Fendi’s master artisans to sew together the different pieces of the Roman leather.

The collection celebrates Fendi’s traditions while remaining totally contemporary. On the one hand there is the use of Roman leather and ultra-light and durable palladium for all the metal details, while, on the other hand, it modern shapes ensure that the styles are always in style. The same can be said for the new must-have colour palette: timeless black, a sophisticated shade of grey, a natural toffee hue and the elegant boldness of peacock blue.

The Selleria collection is available at the Fendi boutique at 181-182 Sloane Street, London SW1X 9QP.
