The Sea, The Sea Opens On Pavilion Road

The Sea, The Sea, the latest offering from Alex Hunter, co-founder and MD of Bonnie Gull (Fitzrovia’s seafood “shack”), has opened on Pavilion Road, cementing the road’s status as London’s most refined gourmet destination.

Named after Iris Murdoch’s book, it’s a fishmonger and deli during the day, when you can pop in for all your fish supper essentials, then a seafood and Champagne bar in the evening, when the oyster bar is converted into a real bar, with small sharing plates, bowls and shellfish platters. And Champagne, naturally.

As head chef, Portuguese rising star Leandro Carreira put together the evening menu, which is comprised of the daily catch in the form of tasting plates, bowls and very special platters. Sample menu dishes include Cornish seabass crudo with crispy parsley sweet cicely; tender squid with pine nuts, sake and beach herbs; and poached Scottish lobster with olive oil and pepper. A carefully selected list of grower Champagnes and wines will be available by the glass.

The fish counter sources the freshest, highest-quality fish and seafood from regional markets around the UK as well as direct from fishermen, supplying a diverse range of species including native lobster and langoustine, halibut, turbot and Ike Jima mackerel.

Complementing the array of daily fresh wet fish and shellfish is a range of homemade seafood deli products and oven-ready dishes to cook at home, as well as stocks, sauces and marinades, pies, ceviches, pickled and smoked seafood.

Skilled chefs work the shop floor, sharing their knowledge of cooking seafood, and The Sea, The Sea will host interactive masterclasses on oyster shucking, fish filleting and curing, as well as a regular guest fishmonger series, where well-known chefs will take over the kitchen for special dinner services. The first few months will showcase the likes of Ikoyi’s Jeremy Chan, UNA’s Martin Milesi and Edoardo Pelicano of Maos.

Make your reservation via www.theseathesea.net, where you can also sign up to the mailing list for access to events, masterclasses and the guest fishmonger series.
