On & Around the Street

This year Chanel is celebrating the house’s founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel with a hugely desirable new family of handbags, called Gabrielle.

The Gabrielle bags, the first permanent bag collection since the cult Boy bags launched six years ago, were unveiled on the runway in October at Chanel’s data-center-themed show in Paris. Chanel’s couturier Karl Lagerfeld said the styles, with their quilting and plain leather treatments, were inspired by virtual reality glasses.

We’re particularly taken with the two-tone handbag styles in either peach and black, or navy and black, but the all white version is just begging to do laps of the Med. There is also a stunning black and white drawstring bucket bag in the mix.

This is just the first of several accolades to the lauded brand’s founder. Chanel will also launch it’s first new fragrance pillar in 15 years, named after the house founder and exalting the rebellious spirit of her early years before she became Coco.

Kristen Stewart, Pharrell, Cara Delevingne, and Caroline de Maigret all star in the campaign for the new bags and a new film has been released, celebrating the freedom, passion and allure of the ground-breaking French designer. Called Gabrielle: Rebel At Heart, the film celebrates all the traits that made Gabrielle Chanel such a fearless force in fashion. It’s the 18th chapter of Chanel’s “Inside Chanel” video series and the first of four that will focus on Gabrielle Chanel.

Gabrielle: Rebel At Heart, sums the audacious designer up in just three verbs: to choose, to desire, to be. It calls her “a conqueror who transformed her rebellion into an art,” and the brief clip is filled with wonderful snippets of advice like, “leave the past behind, and let instinct be your guide,” “desire to look like nobody else,” and “choose simplicity over excess, comfort over appearance, and intuition over principles.”

The Chanel Gabrielle bags will be available at the Sloane Street boutique at 169 Sloane St, SW1X 9QF. Call 020 7235 6631 or visit to secure your place on the waiting list.
